The three shapes are not three grades of the same thing. They defeat a climbing animal by different physics, and the right one is decided by your mount and your clearance, not by price.

A torpedo works by length and instability and is the pick where the pole diameter is known and raccoons are also a problem. Where these specifications came from

The dome: overhang is the whole idea

A disk baffle is a horizontal plate clamped to the pole. An animal climbing from below arrives underneath it and has to reach out past the rim to find anything to grab. The wider the plate, the further that reach has to be, and past some width it stops being possible.

We are not going to publish a magic minimum diameter, because we have not found a sourced figure for how far a squirrel can reach around a rim and we are not inventing one. What we can tell you is the published dimensions. Erva's SB6 states 22.5 in. Erva's 8 in post baffle states 8 in. On a nominal 4x4 post — 3.5 in actual — the second of those leaves roughly 2.25 in of standoff per side, and you can decide for yourself what that is likely to achieve.

The disk's weakness is wind and visual bulk. A 22.5 in steel plate on an exposed lawn is a sail, and on a small patio it dominates. Neither is a performance problem; both are real.

The torpedo: length and instability

A stovepipe is a vertical cylinder that surrounds the pole. There is no rim to hook a claw over, the outer surface is smooth steel, and — crucially — it hangs in a way that lets it tilt and rock when weight arrives on one side. An animal that gets onto it slides off rather than climbing it.

It is the shape to buy when fitment is known and raccoons are in the picture. Woodlink's torpedo publishes a 1.5 in pole fit and names raccoons as well as squirrels, which very few baffles do. The corollary is that bore is not negotiable: on a 1 in pole it will not grip, and on a 2 in pole it will not go on.

The wrap-around: the retrofit answer

A wrap-around cone is a disk or cone split along a seam so it can be closed around a pole that is already in the ground with a feeder on top. If your pole is set in concrete, or the feeder arm does not lift clear, this is not the compromise option — it is the only option.

The trade-off is structural. A seam is a joint, a joint is where load concentrates, and a one-piece disk has neither. If you are building the setup from scratch and the pole is still in the box, buy a one-piece.

What none of the three fixes

All three block the climb. None of them blocks a leap. If a squirrel can jump from a fence rail, a low branch or a deck rail onto the feeder itself, the shape of the thing below it is irrelevant. Audubon puts the required clear air at 8 to 10 feet from anything solid, Cornell says at least 10 feet from jumping-off points, and Squirrel Stopper prints ten feet in its own installation instructions. Three sources, one number.

How we picked

  • We started from the mount, not from the brand. A baffle that does not fit a nominal 4x4 post is not a worse baffle for that reader, it is an irrelevant one.
  • We recorded only published dimensions. Where a maker states a diameter or a pole fit we use it; where none is published we say so rather than measuring a photograph.
  • We applied the clearance geometry from Audubon and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System to every pick, because placement decides more outcomes than product does.
  • We named at least one product to skip on every page, with the reason. A roundup where nothing has a downside is an advertisement.

Questions people actually ask

Which squirrel baffle works best?
On a round pole with clear air around it, a wide disk, because overhang is the most forgiving mechanism. On a known-diameter pole with raccoons about, a torpedo. On a pole you cannot dismantle, a wrap-around, because nothing else will fit.
Is a torpedo baffle better than a dome?
Not better, different. A torpedo is more fitment-sensitive and less visually bulky, and the one here is explicitly rated for raccoons. A dome is more forgiving about pole diameter and gives more lateral protection.
Can I use a wrap-around baffle on a new pole?
You can, but there is no reason to. The seam exists to solve a retrofit problem. If the pole is still in the box, a one-piece disk has no joint to fail.
Do any of these stop raccoons?
Only where the maker says so. Woodlink's torpedo baffle and Erva's SB3 name raccoons in their listings. A squirrel rating is not evidence either way about a much heavier, longer-reaching animal.
