A nominal 4x4 is 3.5 inches across, and it is square. Most of the baffle market is built for round poles, which is why this mount frustrates people who did nothing wrong.
A nominal 4x4 post measures 3.5 in and is square, so round-pole baffles will not fit it. Use a stovepipe made for 4x4 posts, such as Erva's SB3, or a 4x4 disk baffle such as Erva's SB7GLV. Mount the top four to five feet off the ground and keep the post about ten feet from anything solid.
The 4x4 post is extremely common — bird houses, platform feeders, mailbox-style mounts — and it is the mount the baffle market quietly ignores. The listings for most disks and torpedoes specify a round pole diameter, and a square 3.5 in section is not that.
Why nominal lumber sizes matter here
A 4x4 is a nominal dimension. The actual dressed size is 3.5 in by 3.5 in. That half-inch difference is exactly the sort of thing that turns a nearly-fitting sleeve into a returned parcel, and it is why we quote the actual figure whenever we do the arithmetic on this page.
It also sets up the standoff calculation. Erva's post baffle publishes an 8 in diameter. Around a 3.5 in post that is 4.5 in of total annular width, or roughly 2.25 in per side. That is enough of a lip to interrupt a climb up the post face and not enough to matter against a sideways arrival.

A square section does not seat in a round collar. This is the single most common wasted purchase in the category, and it is entirely avoidable by reading the mount type on the listing.
The 8 in post baffle where the post is near a fence or rail
8 in around a 3.5 in post is roughly 2.25 in of standoff per side. That stops a climb up the post and offers essentially nothing against a leap from something nearby.
Stovepipe or disk on a post?
A stovepipe (the SB3) slides down over the post and creates a smooth sleeve the animal cannot get purchase on. Its advantage is that it can usually be fitted without removing whatever is on top, which on a bird house is a significant practical win.
A disk (the SB7GLV) works by overhang instead, so nothing has to grip the post tightly. Its advantage is that it is forgiving about post condition — a weathered, slightly out-of-square post that a sleeve would bind on takes a disk without complaint.

Posts have a second problem: what is next to them
Round feeder poles usually get planted in the open, because that is where a lawn is. Posts get set where a post is useful: at the end of a deck, beside a fence line, against a garden bed. That is precisely the geometry a baffle cannot fix.

- We started from the mount, not from the brand. A baffle that does not fit a nominal 4x4 post is not a worse baffle for that reader, it is an irrelevant one.
