Squirrel-proof bird feeders

There are three mechanisms in this whole category, and each excludes a different animal. Pick the mechanism that matches the animal you actually have, and the brand question mostly answers itself.

Work out what is raiding you before you buy. A weight mechanism is calibrated for a gray squirrel and a chipmunk walks straight under the trigger; a cage stops both but costs you the cardinals. The roundup starts from that question.

Three mechanisms, three different animals

Feeder marketing is a wall of adjectives over a very small number of actual ideas. Reduced to mechanism, there are three, and the choice between them is not about quality:

  • Weight-activated. A shroud or a perch bar drops under weight and closes the ports. Brome's Squirrel Buster Plus is the archetype, and it is adjustable, which is the feature that lets you exclude grackles without excluding cardinals. It excludes by mass, so it is calibrated for something squirrel-sized.
  • Caged. A steel cage around the tube. It excludes by geometry, so mass is irrelevant: it works equally on a gray squirrel, a red squirrel, a chipmunk and a starling. The cost is that larger birds also struggle.
  • Spinning. A motorized perch that rotates under weight. Droll Yankees' Yankee Flipper is the one with a published rechargeable mechanism. It is the only genuinely active option, and the only one with a battery to remember.

The decision falls out of that almost immediately. Chipmunks and red squirrels defeat weight mechanisms because they are too light to trip them. Starlings and grackles defeat cages less often than people expect but do defeat weight settings tuned for cardinals. And a spinning feeder solves the case where there is no pole to baffle at all.

A feeder is not a substitute for placement

Every mechanism above is a second line of defense. The first is where the feeder hangs. Cornell's advice is to position feeders at least 10 feet from jumping-off points, and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System puts a gray squirrel's horizontal jump at roughly eight feet. Get the placement right and a plain tube feeder will often hold. Get it wrong and you will find out exactly how good the mechanism is, repeatedly, until something plastic gives way. The clearance guide has the numbers and the sources.

Suet is its own problem

Suet gets raided harder than seed, and a squirrel will carry a whole cake off rather than eat at the feeder. A cage is the only mechanism that reliably works there, because there is no weight trigger to tune on a suet holder. Where to go from here

  1. Identify the animal. Gray squirrel, red squirrel, chipmunk, starling — they are defeated by different things.
  2. Check the placement against the ten-foot rule before spending anything.
  3. Then choose a mechanism: weight-activated, caged or spinning, or read the head-to-head.

If the feeder is on a pole, a baffle is usually a cheaper fix than a new feeder, and the two together are better than either alone.

Questions people actually ask

Do weight-activated bird feeders actually work?
Against gray squirrels, yes: the mechanism is mass, and a gray squirrel comfortably trips it. Against chipmunks and red squirrels, often not, because they are too light. That is a calibration limit rather than a defect. See weight-activated vs caged.
What is the best squirrel-proof bird feeder for cardinals?
A weight-activated feeder with a cardinal ring, because a cage is inherently awkward for a bird that size. Brome's Squirrel Buster Plus includes a cardinal ring and an adjustable weight setting, which is the combination that keeps cardinals in and grackles out.
Will a squirrel-proof feeder stop chipmunks?
Only a caged one. Weight mechanisms are calibrated for something far heavier, so a chipmunk feeds under the trigger point without ever setting it off.
Do I still need a baffle if I have a squirrel-proof feeder?
If the feeder is on a pole, yes, and it is usually the cheaper half of the fix. The feeder mechanism stops the animal eating; a baffle stops it arriving, which also stops the chewing, the fouling and the seed on the ground.
