A baffle does not fail because it is the wrong brand. It fails because it is in the wrong place. Start with the geometry, then pick the shape that fits what your feeder is actually mounted on.

If you only read one page on this site, read how high a squirrel baffle has to be. Almost every baffle that fails was installed at the wrong height or with too little clear air around it, and no amount of steel fixes that.

The baffle is not the variable. The placement is.

Every review in this category ranks baffles against each other as though the product decides the outcome. It mostly does not. A gray squirrel can jump about four feet vertically and roughly twice that horizontally, according to the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Those two numbers, and where your pole sits relative to the nearest fence, branch or rail, decide whether a baffle works far more than the gauge of its steel does.

That is why this hub is organized by mount type rather than by brand. The question that matters is not which baffle is best in the abstract; it is which baffle physically fits a round pole, a 4x4 wooden post, a shepherd's hook, a tree trunk or a hanging feeder, and whether you can give it the clearance it needs once it is on.

The three shapes, and what each one is actually doing

There are only three mechanisms in this category, and the marketing names obscure them.

  • Disk or dome. A wide horizontal plate. It works by overhang: an animal on the pole below has to reach out past the rim, and a wide enough rim makes that geometrically impossible. Erva's SB6 publishes a 22.5 in diameter, which is the largest published figure in our set.
  • Torpedo or stovepipe. A vertical cylinder around the pole. It works by length and instability: there is no rim to grab, and the sleeve tilts and slips under weight. Fitment is critical — Woodlink's torpedo publishes a 1.5 in pole fit, and the wrong bore simply will not work.
  • Wrap-around cone. A cone that opens along a seam so it can be fitted to an installed pole. It works the same way a disk does, and exists for the very common case where the feeder cannot easily come off the pole.

None of these stops an animal that lands above the baffle. That is the whole reason clearance decides the outcome. If a squirrel can leap from a fence rail onto the feeder itself, the baffle underneath is decoration.

Where the published advice contradicts itself

Audubon says the baffle should sit between four and five feet off the ground and the feeder should be at least 8 to 10 feet from anything solid. Those are two different measurements: one vertical, one horizontal. A page-one result in this category publishes 6 to 10 feet as the mounting height, which reads like the horizontal figure has been pasted into the vertical slot. Follow it on a standard seven-foot feeder pole and there is nowhere left to hang the feeder.

We flag disagreements like that rather than smoothing them over. The clearance guide shows both numbers, names both sources, and works through the arithmetic so you can check it against your own yard rather than take our word for it.

What to do next

  1. Measure your mount. Round pole, and what diameter? A nominal 4x4 post, which is actually 3.5 in? A shepherd's hook? That single answer eliminates most of the market.
  2. Measure the clear air. Stand at the feeder and look for the nearest fence, rail, branch, wall or planter. If anything solid is closer than about ten feet, fix that before you buy anything.

If the pole itself is the problem — too short, too thin, too close to the fence — a complete pole system is often cheaper than a baffle plus the fix. And if the squirrels are also working your vegetable beds, the same animal is the subject of the garden section: same species, different target.

Questions people actually ask

How high should a squirrel baffle be mounted?
Audubon puts the baffle between four and five feet off the ground. That figure exists because a gray squirrel can jump about four feet vertically, so a baffle whose top sits at four to five feet cannot be cleared from a standing start. The full arithmetic is here.
Do squirrel baffles actually work?
Yes, when the geometry is right, and reliably not when it is not. A baffle only blocks the climb; it does nothing about a leap from a nearby fence or branch. That is why the placement rules matter more than the product. See do squirrel baffles work.
What size baffle do I need?
Wider is better for disks, because the mechanism is overhang. Only some makers publish a diameter at all: Erva's SB6 states 22.5 in, and Erva's 8 in post baffle states 8 in, which around a 3.5 in post leaves only about 2.25 in of standoff per side.
Will a baffle stop raccoons as well?
Only if the maker says so. Woodlink's torpedo baffle and Erva's SB3 both name raccoons in their listings; most disk baffles do not. Raccoons are heavier and longer-reaching, so a baffle rated only for squirrels is not evidence either way.
