DIY squirrel deterrents that work

The DIY fixes that work are the ones that replicate a real mechanism: a slinky on a pole, a homemade stovepipe baffle, a wire layer over bulbs, and moving the feeder. Greasing the pole and sticky repellents harm wildlife and should never be used. Most other folk remedies have no published support.

What works, because the physics is the same

Moving the feeder

The most effective DIY fix there is, and it costs nothing. Cornell puts feeders at least 10 feet from jumping-off points; the Alabama Cooperative Extension System puts a gray squirrel's horizontal jump at about eight feet. Ten feet of clear air outperforms every product on this site.

The slinky

Fix one end of a long metal slinky to the top of the pole under the feeder and let it hang down the shaft. An animal that climbs onto it rides it back to the ground as it extends.

This works because it is the torpedo baffle's mechanism — instability rather than overhang — implemented in a spring. Use a metal slinky rather than plastic, secure the top properly, and check it after weather. It is genuinely effective and it looks like exactly what it is.

A homemade stovepipe baffle

A length of aluminum or galvanized stovepipe hung around the pole, capped at the top so an animal cannot get inside it, does the same job as a bought torpedo. The two things to get right are the same as for a bought one: the top edge at four to five feet, and enough diameter that reaching around it is not trivial.

Note that a bought baffle at this size is not expensive, is properly finished at the edges, and comes with collars designed for the job. DIY here is a reasonable choice if you have the material and the time, not a large saving.

Wire over bulbs

Lay 1 in or smaller mesh flat over a freshly planted bulb bed, pin the corners, and cover with an inch or two of soil. Shoots grow through in spring and the digging window is closed. This is genuinely the best fix for bulbs, bought or homemade.

A seed tray

Anything that catches spill removes the ground-level buffet. A tray does not have to be a purpose-made accessory to work, and cleaning up the spill does more for the overall problem than most people expect.

What harms wildlife — do not do these

A baffle costs less than most of the alternatives, works indefinitely, and harms nothing. There is no version of this problem where the cruel option is also the effective one.

Folklore we cannot support

• CDs, foil strips and reflective tape. A static visual scare, and animals habituate to those within days. See scare tactics that work.
• Predator urine products. No published effectiveness data for garden squirrel deterrence in anything we found.
• Human or pet hair scattered around. Same. It also degrades into a mess.
• Mothballs. Ineffective outdoors, and using them contrary to their label directions is illegal in the US. They are also toxic to pets and children.
• Cayenne sprinkled loose on the ground. Blows away, washes off, and gets into eyes. Capsaicin mixed into seed at a published ratio is a real method; loose powder is not.

Where DIY is not worth it

Two cases. First, anything structural — a homemade pole that cannot be anchored properly is a pole that leans, and a leaning pole eats the clearance you were relying on. Second, fitment-critical parts: a baffle collar that does not grip is a baffle that slides down the pole to a height where it does nothing.

For everything else, the DIY versions on this page work for exactly the same reason the bought ones do. The clearance guide is what makes either of them work.
