The best deer fencing
Every polypropylene deer fence on the market is shorter than the height extension services recommend. That is worth knowing before you buy one, including from us.
Extension services put effective deer fences at 8 to 10 ft, with woven wire at 10 ft as the only sure barrier. Every polypropylene deer fence sold online, including all the picks here, is 7.5 ft. That compromise usually holds on sloping or wooded ground and is a real gamble on flat open ground under pressure.
Let us deal with the awkward part first, because everything else follows from it.

We are still recommending 7.5 ft mesh, and here is the reasoning rather than the marketing. Deer jump what they can see a landing for. On sloping ground, in woodland, or where the fence line is against vegetation, the effective height is greater than the measured height and the landing is unclear, so 7.5 ft holds far more often than the flat-ground figure suggests. On a level lawn with a clear run-up and real pressure, it does not.
If your situation is the second one, the honest recommendation is woven wire at 8 to 10 ft, which is a fencing-contractor purchase rather than an online one. How high a deer fence has to be works through the terrain cases.

Michigan State University Extension puts effective perimeters at 8 to 10 ft and says the only sure barriers are woven wire fences or walls at least 10 ft tall. Penn State Extension notes deer can jump an 8 ft fence and suggests considering 10 to 12 ft. On flat open ground with pressure, 7.5 ft of polypropylene is a knowing gamble.
Deer netting sold as a perimeter
Tenax's 7 ft netting is a drape product for individual plants. Using drape netting as a boundary is how people conclude that deer fencing does not work.
Any fence with an unsecured bottom edge
Deer go under fences far more often than people expect, and the ground line is also where rabbits and dogs work. A fence pinned at the top and loose at the bottom is a curtain.
The specs that actually differentiate these
Since all five are 7.5 ft or 7 ft polypropylene, height is not the variable. Three published figures are:
- Breaking load. Tenax's Select publishes a certified 600 to 650 lb and the reinforced-edge version publishes 600 lb. This is the spec that predicts whether the fence survives a deer hitting it at speed, and most of the market publishes nothing comparable.
- Life expectancy. The Select publishes 10 to 15 years; the Pro publishes over 10 years. UV degradation is what kills polypropylene, so a stated life is a meaningful durability claim.
- Roll length. 100 ft on most, 164 ft on the Premium. Every join is a weak point, so fewer joins on a long perimeter is a structural benefit rather than a convenience.
The ground line is where fences fail
Deer go under. Rabbits go under. Dogs push. Frost heave opens gaps. The reinforced-edge version exists because the bottom of a mesh fence takes abuse the middle never does, and a published 10-year warranty on that edge is a reasonable thing to pay for.
Whatever you buy, pin the bottom edge continuously — ground staples every couple of feet, or a tensioned bottom wire. A fence secured at the top and loose at the bottom is a curtain with a gap under it.
What fencing gives you that nothing else does
It works while you are not thinking about it. A repellent decays from the moment it is applied; a sprinkler stops when it freezes; a device gets habituated to. A fence at the right height is the same barrier in March that it was in June, with no schedule and no reapplication.
