Sprinkler vs ultrasonic vs spray
Three categories, three very different evidence bases. This page is mostly about how to tell them apart before you spend anything.
A motion sprinkler publishes a checkable mechanism and works on a defined route in frost-free months. A spray is a coating that works while it is on the plant and needs reapplying after rain and new growth. Ultrasonic devices publish no frequency, range or habituation data, so we do not rank them.

Where these specifications came from
Why we will not rank ultrasonic devices
This is worth being precise about, because it is easy to misread as a claim they do not work. It is not that claim.
We rank products by comparing published specifications. For a motion sprinkler that means detection range and spray duration. For a treatment it means a mixing ratio and a yield. For an ultrasonic repeller we would need a frequency, a sound pressure level, a coverage area, and ideally something about habituation — and we have not found listings that publish any of it.
Without those we have nothing to compare. Ranking one on the strength of its own adjectives would be exactly the behavior this site was set up to avoid, so we leave the category unranked and say why. If a maker publishes real specifications, we will assess them.
Sprinkler: startle, on a route
Best where an animal uses a consistent approach and the season is frost-free. Orbit's published 40 ft adjustable range and 3 to 10 second spray let you plan placement rather than guess it. The two limits are habituation, which is countered by moving the unit, and freezing, which is not counterable at all.
Spray: mitigation, on a schedule
Best on plants you cannot fence and feeders you cannot baffle. Two different products in this family, and they are not interchangeable:
- Plant repellents — Plantskydd, Bobbex. Applied to foliage, they reduce browse. Published yields let you work out cost per treated area, which decides whether you keep applying. Best deer repellents.
- Seed treatments — Cole's Flaming Squirrel Seed Sauce. Capsaicin exploits the difference between mammal and bird taste receptors, and the published dose is 1.5 oz per 5 lb of seed. Squirrel repellents.
And the option that beats all three
Exclusion. A baffle at four to five feet, a fence at the height extension services publish, or two feet of buried wire. None of those habituates, none needs reapplying, and none stops working when it freezes.
Deterrents are what you use when exclusion is not available. That is a real and common situation — a balcony, a mature tree, a boundary you cannot fence — and it is why this section exists. It is not the place to start.
How we picked
- We filtered on published mechanism first. If a maker will not state a detection range, a dose or a frequency, we cannot compare the product and we do not rank it.
- We recorded published figures only — detection ranges, spray durations, mixing ratios, stated species coverage.
- We separated startle from exclusion. A device that works by surprise decays through habituation; a barrier does not. We say which is which on every page.
- We named at least one product to skip on every page, with the reason.
- We have not tested any of these. How we pick sets out what that does and does not cover.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: read the manuals, compiled the published specifications, worked out the clearance geometry, and cited every source. The full method is published.
Questions people actually ask
- Do ultrasonic animal repellers work?
- We cannot say, and that is the honest answer. The listings publish no frequency, sound pressure level, coverage area or habituation data, so there is nothing to assess. We rank on published specifications and these have none.
- Is a sprinkler better than a spray?
- For a defined route in frost-free months, yes, and it needs no schedule. For an area, for individual plants, and for winter, a spray program covers more.
- What is the most effective animal deterrent?
- Exclusion, in every case where it is available: a correctly placed baffle, a fence at the published height, or buried wire. Deterrents are for the situations where exclusion is not possible.
- Can I combine a sprinkler and a spray?
- Yes, and it is usually the right answer. A sprinkler on the route the animals use, a repellent on the plants outside whatever you have fenced.
