Raccoon deterrents

A raccoon is not a large squirrel. It is heavier, stronger, better with its hands and far more persistent, and a baffle rated for squirrels tells you nothing about it.

Start by removing the food: spilled birdseed, unsecured bins and outdoor pet bowls outweigh any device. Then use a baffle whose listing explicitly names raccoons, such as Woodlink's torpedo or Erva's SB3, and add a motion sprinkler on the approach they use.

Raccoons are the hardest animal on this site to deter, for a reason that is not about strength. They are unusually good at problem-solving and unusually persistent, so any measure that can be worked around eventually is.

Food management first, and it is not close

Everything else on this page is secondary to this. A raccoon that finds a reliable food source returns to it nightly and works on every obstacle in the way. A raccoon that finds nothing moves on within a few nights.

  • Spilled seed under a feeder is the most common attractant in a garden, and a seed tray fixes most of it. It also stops feeding the ground squirrels and rats.
  • Bins need a latch, not a lid. A raccoon opens a lid; a bungee or a latching bin is a different proposition.
  • Pet food outdoors is a standing invitation. Bring it in overnight.
  • Fallen fruit under trees does the same job as spilled seed. Rake it.

This is unglamorous and free, and it does more than any product below. Say what you like about a site that sells things — that is still true.

What we would skip

  • Any baffle whose listing does not name raccoons

    A squirrel rating is not a raccoon rating. Raccoons are heavier and longer-reaching, and a baffle that has only been designed against a squirrel is untested against them by definition. Woodlink's torpedo and Erva's SB3 both name raccoons; most do not.

  • Solar predator-eye and ultrasonic units

    No published detection range, frequency, sound level or habituation data. Raccoons are among the most adaptable mammals in North America, which makes an unverifiable startle claim especially hard to take seriously.

  • Any deterrent, while food is still available

    Spilled seed, unsecured bins and pet food outdoors outweigh every device on this page. A nightly free meal beats a startle every time, and no product on the market competes with removing it.

Baffles that name raccoons

Most baffles are designed and specified against squirrels. Two here are not. Woodlink's torpedo baffle is described as a raccoon and squirrel baffle and publishes a 1.5 in pole fit; Erva's SB3 is a raccoon and squirrel baffle and guard for 4x4 posts. Squirrel Stopper's Deluxe pole system states it is raccoon-proof and uses a spring baffle rather than a fixed one.

That spring is worth understanding. A fixed disk relies on overhang; a raccoon has more reach and more weight to work with. A sprung baffle collapses under that weight and drops the animal, which is an active response to a heavier animal rather than a passive obstacle it might eventually beat.

Where the sprinkler fits

Raccoons are nocturnal and route-driven, which is exactly what a motion sprinkler handles well. Orbit's Yard Enforcer publishes day and night detection modes and an adjustable range up to 40 ft, so it can be set to fire only after dark on the path they actually use.

What we are not going to recommend

Trapping and relocation. It is regulated differently in every state, it frequently kills the animal it was meant to spare, and the vacated territory is usually occupied within weeks. If you have a raccoon in a structure rather than in a garden, that is a job for a licensed wildlife control operator and not for anything sold on this site.

Poison, for the same reasons and worse. It is indiscriminate, it kills pets and non-target wildlife, and it is illegal in many jurisdictions.

How we picked

  • We filtered on published mechanism first. If a maker will not state a detection range, a dose or a frequency, we cannot compare the product and we do not rank it.
  • We recorded published figures only — detection ranges, spray durations, mixing ratios, stated species coverage.
  • We separated startle from exclusion. A device that works by surprise decays through habituation; a barrier does not. We say which is which on every page.
  • We named at least one product to skip on every page, with the reason.

What keeps raccoons off a bird feeder?
A baffle whose listing explicitly names raccoons, plus removing spilled seed underneath. Woodlink's torpedo and Erva's SB3 both name raccoons; most baffles are specified against squirrels only.
Will a squirrel baffle stop a raccoon?
Not reliably. Raccoons are heavier and reach further, and a baffle designed against a squirrel has not been designed against them. Buy one that names raccoons, or use a spring baffle.
Do ultrasonic raccoon repellers work?
We have found no published frequency, sound level, detection range or habituation data for them, so we cannot assess or rank them. Raccoons are unusually adaptable, which makes unverifiable startle claims especially hard to credit.
What is the fastest way to get rid of raccoons?

Should I trap a raccoon?
