Building a squirrel-proof feeder pole
There is no secret to a homemade pole. It works if it hits the same two numbers a bought system hits, and it fails for exactly the same reasons if it does not.

Set a smooth metal pole where nothing solid is within about ten feet, anchor it so it cannot lean, and fit a baffle with its top four to five feet off the ground and the feeder above that. Those three numbers are the whole design. Materials matter far less than hitting them.
A bought pole system is a set of distances someone else worked out. You are not buying steel, you are buying geometry — which means a homemade pole is entirely viable as long as you produce the same geometry.

Materials that hold up
- Smooth metal pole. Galvanized pipe, EMT conduit or a steel fence post. What matters is a smooth exterior — wood, and anything with a rough or textured surface, is a ladder.
- Diameter you can baffle. Decide the baffle first and buy pipe to suit it. Woodlink's torpedo publishes a 1.5 in fit; stovepipe baffles are bore-specific and a pole that does not match is a pole you cannot protect.
- A real ground anchor. A pole set in a driven sleeve or concrete stays plumb. A pole pushed into soft ground leans, and a leaning pole is a closer pole with something to rock.
- Steel, not plastic, for anything an animal touches. Erva states its baffles use steel collars that cannot be chewed. A plastic clamp on a homemade pole is where it will fail.
Baffle options, bought and homemade
You can buy a baffle and fit it to your own pole — usually the better call, because a bought disk publishes a diameter, has finished edges and comes with collars designed for the job. Erva's SB6 publishes 22.5 in, the widest we found.

- A stovepipe. A capped length of aluminum or galvanized stovepipe hung so it can tilt. The cap matters — an open top is a hiding place, not a barrier.
- A slinky. A long metal slinky fixed at the top of the pole and hanging down the shaft. An animal that climbs onto it rides it back down as it extends. This is the torpedo baffle's instability mechanism in spring form, and it genuinely works.

Where these specifications came from
Two shortcuts to never take
Both circulate widely in DIY advice and both harm the birds you are feeding.

A baffle costs less than most of the alternatives, works indefinitely and harms nothing. There is no version of this problem where the cruel option is also the effective one.
Build order
- Choose the site before you buy anything. Stand where the pole will go and look around at feeder height — five to six feet, not at your ankles. Every solid surface within about ten feet is a launch pad. Ten feet is roughly three and a half normal paces.
- Buy the baffle, then the pole to fit it. Doing it the other way round is how people end up with a pole no baffle clamps to.
- Set the pole so it does not move when pushed hard. Test it with real force before you hang anything.
- Fit the baffle with its top at four to five feet. Measure it rather than eyeballing it; this is the number the whole build turns on.
- Hang the feeder clear above the baffle, not resting on it. A feeder sitting on the baffle is a bridge between the two.
- Add a tray. Spilled seed under the pole feeds everything the baffle just excluded.
When to just buy the system
Price it honestly before starting. A pole, a bought baffle, a ground anchor and the fixings often land close to a complete system that arrives with the geometry already solved. Squirrel Stopper's Sequoia publishes four hanging stations, a mid-pole universal baffle, a 6 to 7 ft hanging height, an auger anchor and — unusually — a stated ten-foot setback.
DIY makes sense when you have the materials already, when you need a non-standard height, or when the site needs something a stock system does not do. It makes less sense purely as a saving. Pole systems compares the bought options.

- Is building one cheaper than buying a system?
- Often less than people expect once you add the baffle, the anchor and the fixings. DIY makes most sense when you already have materials or need a non-standard height, rather than purely as a saving.
