How to keep deer out of the garden
There is one method that removes the problem and several that reduce it. Doing them in the right order is the difference between fixing this and repeating it every spring.
Fence the perimeter at 8 to 10 feet if you can, because that is the only method whose effectiveness does not decay. Then use a repellent on a schedule for anything outside the fence, a motion sprinkler on the specific approach that keeps failing, and choose less-browsed plants for the front line.
Step 1. Fence, if the site allows it
Michigan State University Extension states that perimeter fences need to be at least 8 to 10 feet tall to be effective, and that the only sure deer barriers are woven wire fences or walls at least 10 feet tall. Penn State Extension notes deer are capable of jumping an 8 ft fence and suggests considering 10 to 12 ft.
That is a demanding specification, and it is also the only method on this page that works the same in year five as in week one. Everything else decays: repellents wash off, devices get habituated to, plant preferences shift under pressure.
Most people compromise on 7.5 ft polypropylene mesh, which is what the market sells. It holds well on sloping or wooded ground where a deer cannot see a clean landing, and it is a genuine gamble on flat open ground. How high a deer fence has to be covers the terrain cases, and deer fencing covers the products.
Step 2. Repel what you cannot fence
The shrubs by the drive, the containers by the door, the front border you are not going to enclose. This is the right job for a repellent, and the wrong job is asking one to substitute for a fence.
- Buy concentrate, not ready-to-use. Cost per treated area decides whether you keep applying. Plantskydd's 2.2 lb powder publishes a yield of 2.5 gallons.
- Put it on a calendar, not on a damage response. After rain, and after any significant new growth.
- Rotate genuinely different products. Plantskydd's base is dried blood meal; Bobbex is a different formulation. Alternating those is a rotation; alternating two blood-meal products is a change of label.
Step 3. A device on the one approach that keeps failing
Deer use routes. If there is one gap, one gate or one corner where the damage always starts, a motion sprinkler across that route is a good use of a hundred dollars. Orbit's Yard Enforcer publishes passive infrared detection, an adjustable range up to 40 ft and a 3 to 10 second spray.
Two limits, both real. It covers a route rather than an area, so aim it across the path and not along it. And it is hose-fed, so it comes out of service when the water freezes — which is often when browse pressure peaks. Motion-activated sprinklers covers placement properly.

Step 4. Change what is on the menu
This is free and permanent, and it is the step most often left out. Colorado State University Extension publishes deer-resistant plant lists. Nothing is deer-proof under enough pressure, but moving the most-browsed species out of the front line reduces how hard every other method has to work.
Practical version: put the plants deer strongly prefer inside the fence or near the house, and use less-preferred species on the boundary where the pressure lands first.

The realistic outcome
A fenced perimeter plus a repellent program plus sensible planting gets most gardens to a state where deer damage is occasional rather than routine. Total elimination without an 8-to-10-foot fence is not a realistic goal, and anyone promising it is selling something.
