The best large-capacity bird feeders
Capacity is the one feeder spec that looks like a free upgrade and is not. Three things get worse as the hopper gets bigger.
The Woodlink Absolute II at a published 12 lb is the most capacity with a real weight mechanism; the 10 lb metal mesh feeders hold nearly as much for half the price but exclude nothing by themselves. The trade to understand first: Project FeederWatch notes large hoppers "allow larger species, like doves and grackles to feed", so volume costs you selectivity as well as seed freshness.
Nobody researches capacity until they have spent a winter refilling a feeder in the cold. Then it becomes the only spec that matters, and the listings are happy to sell on it without mentioning what it costs.

What we would skip
Ten pounds of seed in a humid climate
Seed does not keep indefinitely in a feeder. In humidity it cakes at the bottom and can mold, and a large hopper is a large volume sitting still. Fill a big feeder part way in summer and use its full capacity in cold, dry weather.
A large-capacity feeder on an unbaffled mount
Three of the four picks here have no exclusion mechanism at all — the capacity is protected by metal mesh and by where you hang it. A ten-pound reservoir within reach is not a bird feeder, it is a supply depot.
What capacity actually buys, and what it costs
The benefit is obvious and real: fewer trips, which matters most in exactly the weather you least want to be outside. Three costs come with it, and the first one is published.
Selectivity. Project FeederWatch describes the trade directly: "Large hoppers attract most species of feeder birds and will allow larger species, like doves and grackles to feed", against "Small hoppers will attract smaller birds while preventing larger species, like grackles, from comfortably perching." A big feeder is a more welcoming feeder, to everything.
Freshness. Seed sitting in a hopper is seed exposed to humidity. FeederWatch notes tube feeders "keep seed fairly dry" — a hopper's job is weather protection too, but volume still means the bottom of the load may sit for weeks. Caked or moldy seed is a bird-health issue, not a tidiness one.
Load. Twelve pounds of seed plus the feeder is real weight on a hook or an arm. It bends thin shepherd's hooks, it tilts poorly seated poles, and on a weight-activated feeder it is more mass hanging off the mechanism.

All capacities as published by each maker. Note that the two largest have no mechanism and the one with the most adjustable mechanism holds the least.
That table is the whole decision. Capacity and mechanism run in opposite directions across this set, and which one you prioritize depends entirely on whether the mount is already baffled.
If the pole is baffled, buy capacity
This is the honest version of the advice. A correctly baffled pole — top of the baffle at four to five feet, eight to ten feet of clear air, ten feet from the nearest launch point — has already solved exclusion. A feeder hanging above that does not need a mechanism of its own, so paying for one is paying twice.
In that situation the 10 lb metal mesh feeders are the better buy: nearly the capacity of the 12 lb hopper at half the price, with the exclusion coming from geometry. The best squirrel-proof feeder poles and squirrel jump clearance cover that side.
If the mount cannot be baffled — a branch, a fence, a rail — then the mechanism is all you have, and the Absolute II or the Squirrel Buster is the purchase regardless of capacity. Weight-activated feeders covers how those work.
Lids, because raccoons open them
On a small feeder the lid is a filling port. On a large one it is a door to ten pounds of seed, and raccoons are good with doors.
One pick here publishes a lock top, which is unusual at any price and genuinely useful if raccoons visit. The others rely on the lid's own fit. Raccoon deterrents covers the wider problem, and the short version is that a raccoon that can reach the feeder will eventually get the lid off.
How to use a big feeder well
- Fill to capacity only in cold, dry weather. Part-fill through humid months.
- Empty it completely before a refill rather than topping up, so old seed does not sit at the bottom indefinitely.
- Check the bottom of the hopper for caking every time you open it. That is where it starts.
- Weigh up your mount honestly. A full 12 lb feeder belongs on a driven pole or a 5/8 in shaft, not on a decorative hook.

When a big feeder is the wrong answer
If the birds you want are chickadees, nuthatches and titmice, capacity is working against you on two counts: the large hopper admits the larger birds that push them off, and the slow turnover means staler seed. How we picked
- We sorted by mechanism first: weight, cage or spin. Those three exclude different animals, and the choice between them is not a quality judgment.
- We used published figures only — seed capacity, port count, dimensions, mechanism. Where a maker publishes nothing, the spec row says so.
- We checked each mechanism against the animal it is calibrated for. A weight trigger tuned for a gray squirrel does not fire for a chipmunk, and we say so rather than implying it does.
- We named at least one product to skip on every page, with the reason.
