How to keep squirrels off bird feeders
Seven methods, ranked by how reliably they work rather than by how often they are recommended. The most effective one is free.
Move the feeder at least ten feet from anything solid, then fit a baffle with its top four to five feet off the ground. Those two steps solve most cases. A weight-activated or caged feeder handles what is left, and a capsaicin seed treatment covers sites where the geometry cannot be fixed.

1. Distance, which costs nothing
Cornell's guidance is to position feeders at least 10 feet from jumping-off points. Audubon says 8 to 10 feet from anything solid. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System explains why: a gray squirrel covers about eight feet horizontally.
Moving a pole is free, permanent, and more effective than anything else on this page. It is also the step almost every buying guide skips, because it does not sell anything.
2. A baffle, at the right height
Top at four to five feet, feeder above. Given the clearance from step 1, this is close to a permanent solution and needs nothing from you afterwards. Without the clearance it does very little, which is the whole content of do squirrel baffles work.
3. The feeder itself
Pick the mechanism by the animal, not by the marketing:
- Gray squirrels — a weight-activated feeder. Brome's Squirrel Buster Plus adds a cardinal ring so the trigger can sit heavy without excluding the big birds.
- Chipmunks or red squirrels — a caged feeder. They are too light to trip a weight mechanism, and a cage does not care.
- No pole to baffle — a spinning feeder, which works wherever it hangs at the cost of a battery.

4. Seed choices that reduce the attraction
Two levers, and neither is a silver bullet:
- Capsaicin treatment. Mammals register the heat, birds do not. Cole's publishes 1.5 oz per 5 lb of seed, which makes it repeatable. Squirrel repellents has the detail.
- Safflower and nyjer. Both are less attractive to squirrels than sunflower and corn, and both are readily taken by cardinals and finches respectively. Changing what is on offer changes how hard the problem works at you.
5. Clean up underneath
Spilled seed is a ground-level feeding station that no baffle protects. It sustains the local squirrel population, and over time it recruits rats and raccoons. A seed tray catches most of it; a rake handles the rest.
Things not to do
- Do not grease the pole. Petroleum jelly and cooking oil transfer to fur and feathers, where they wreck insulation and waterproofing. It is cruel and it does not last a rain shower.
- Do not use sticky repellent products on a feeder pole. Same problem, worse.
- Do not trap and relocate. It is regulated differently in every state, frequently kills the animal, and the territory is reoccupied within weeks.
- Do not shoot or poison. Beyond the legal and ethical problems, poison is indiscriminate and kills pets and non-target wildlife.
There is a version of this problem that is genuinely solved by geometry and hardware, humanely and permanently. Everything on that list is what people reach for when they have skipped step 1.
Accept the squirrels you cannot exclude
A ground tray away from the feeder, with cheap corn or peanuts, gives the local squirrels somewhere to be that is not your feeder. It is not a mechanism and it does not always work, but on a yard where full clearance is impossible it changes the economics of the situation in your favor.
If they are also working your vegetable beds, that is the same animal on a different target — keeping squirrels out of the garden covers that side.
Questions people actually ask
- What is the most effective way to keep squirrels off a bird feeder?
- Distance, then a baffle. Cornell puts feeders at least 10 ft from jumping-off points, and a baffle with its top four to five feet off the ground closes the climb. Together they solve most cases permanently.
- Does greasing a bird feeder pole work?
- No, and it harms wildlife. Grease and petroleum jelly transfer to fur and feathers and damage insulation and waterproofing. A baffle does the job permanently and harms nothing.
- What seed do squirrels not like?
- Safflower and nyjer are markedly less attractive to squirrels than sunflower or corn, and cardinals and finches take them readily. Capsaicin-treated seed is the other lever, at a published 1.5 oz per 5 lb.
- Should I feed the squirrels somewhere else?
- A ground tray well away from the feeder is worth trying on a yard that cannot achieve full clearance. It is not a mechanism and it does not always work, but it changes the balance of convenience.
- Will a squirrel-proof feeder alone fix this?
- Usually not on its own. A feeder mechanism stops the animal eating; it does not stop it arriving, chewing, fouling or clearing the tray below. Distance and a baffle do more.
