Squirrel damage around the yard

Most yard damage is gnawing rather than feeding, so a taste repellent has limited purchase on it. Physical protection is the answer: conduit or hardware cloth over low-voltage cable, and covers on soft furnishings. Chewed mains-voltage wiring is an electrical job, not a wildlife one.

The feeder and the vegetable bed are covered elsewhere on this site. This page is the remainder — the damage that does not fit either category and tends to be discovered rather than witnessed.

Why they gnaw things that are not food

Squirrels are rodents, and rodent incisors grow continuously. Gnawing is maintenance rather than appetite, which has a practical consequence worth understanding: a taste-based repellent has much less to act on than it does with feeding damage. The animal is not tasting the cable.

That is the same distinction that makes repellents useless against buck rub on trees. When the behavior is not eating, a taste deterrent is aimed at the wrong mechanism, and physical protection is what is left.

Low-voltage cable: the common one

Garden lighting, irrigation controllers and similar run low-voltage cable, often stapled along a fence or laid shallow. It is soft, it is the right diameter to gnaw, and the damage shows up as a lighting circuit that has stopped working rather than as visible destruction.

• Run it in conduit. Rigid conduit is the reliable fix. Flexible split loom is better than nothing but is itself chewable.
• Bury it properly where the run allows, to the depth the manufacturer specifies.
• Sleeve the exposed sections — where cable leaves the ground or crosses a rail is where it gets found.
• Wrap junctions in hardware cloth if conduit is impractical. The same galvanized mesh used for rabbit fencing works here.

Decks, rails and furniture

Timber gnawing on rails and posts is usually incidental — the squirrel is somewhere it wants to be and the rail is what is there. Outdoor cushions and furniture covers are a different motive: soft fill is nesting material, and a shredded cushion is usually material theft rather than damage for its own sake.

The fixes are unglamorous. Store cushions inside or in a sealed box when not in use, which removes the resource entirely. Metal or composite rails are not gnawed the way timber is, though that is a replacement decision rather than a fix. And a motion sprinkler on a deck approach works on the same startle principle it does everywhere else — Orbit's Yard Enforcer publishes an adjustable range up to 40 ft and a 3 to 10 second spray.

The connection people miss

All of this scales with the local squirrel population, and the biggest single input to that population in most yards is spilled birdseed.

A feeder without a tray is a permanent ground-level food supply. Fitting a tray and a correctly placed baffle reduces pressure on everything else in the yard, at no additional cost. If you are dealing with chewed cable and a raided feeder at the same time, they are the same problem.

What we do not recommend

• Trapping and relocation. Regulated differently in every state, frequently fatal to the animal, and the vacated territory is reoccupied within weeks.
• Poison. Indiscriminate, kills pets and non-target wildlife, and illegal in many jurisdictions.
• Ultrasonic devices. No published frequency, sound level, coverage area or habituation data — see do ultrasonic repellents work.
• Greasing anything. Transfers to fur and feathers and destroys insulation and waterproofing.

If the damage is on the structure

Gnawing at a soffit, a fascia or a vent is a different and more urgent category, because it is an attempt to get in rather than incidental wear.
